Strawberries are incredibly delicious! They are amazing for you and even have a national day dedicated to them. That calls for some celebration! Here’s just a little bit of love for those delicious little red fruits that we love to dip in chocolate.
First, here’s some great fun facts about strawberries! Did you know that strawberries are the only fruit that has their seeds on the outside? Think about that. Apples, oranges, pomegranates, they all have their seeds on the inside. What a silly little fruit strawberries are for having them on the outside. Strawberries are both part of the rose family and perennials. They smell sweet like roses and the plant will come back every single year to grow more strawberries. Be careful though, strawberry plants like to multiply really quickly, so one plant could turn into 10 the next year! Finally, Belgium (the country in Europe) actually as an entire museum dedicated to strawberries. Crazy right?! It’s called Le Musee de la Fraise and it’s gift shop sells almost everything strawberry related.
Now that we know some fun facts about strawberries, let’s talk about some strange facts. France actually used to use strawberries for medicinal purposes, thinking that they used to have some sort of healing property to them. Just imagine being prescribed an entire container of strawberries to eat so you can get better! Another weird fact is that the flavor of a strawberry is actually dependent on the weather, the type of strawberry, and how ripe it is. Seems pretty strange considering it seems that all strawberries taste the same to me.
Finally, you can celebrate National Strawberry Day by making some chocolate covered strawberries with me and Betty Crocker.
Strawberries, 1 container
Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips, ½ Cup
Shortening or Vegetable Oil, 1 Teaspoon
Wash and dry all of your strawberries.
Make sure that your strawberries are completely dry before doing anything else!
Line a cookie sheet with wax paper
In a saucepan, melt the chocolate chips and shortening over low heat. Stir frequently until melted.
Dip the lower half of your strawberries into the chocolate. Let the excess chocolate drip back into the bowl before placing them on the wax paper.
Once you’re completely done dipping your strawberries refrigerate for 30 minutes or until the chocolate is hard.
Serve and enjoy!
Remember, February 27th is National Strawberry Day! Go out there, have fun, and celebrate those little red fruits. Make some strawberry themed food. Enjoy a few extra strawberries. Maybe you can even try to find the craziest fact about them with a group of friends. Strawberries are delicious and they totally deserve their own day.
