Meditation has never been popular with teenagers. For some reason people think it’s just relaxing in funny positions, or sitting with your legs crossed and saying “Oohm.” Meditation really isn’t what popular culture likes us to believe. It can truly help your mental health in many different ways like getting rid of stress and clearing your mind of negativity. We all should start meditating to improve ourselves mentally.

One of the first ways that meditation can improve your mental health is by reducing stress. Meditation is a way for our brains to slow down and process things during the day. We’re constantly running around all day, going from class to class or job to job. There’s hardly any time during the day to sit back and process everything that has happened. This can build up stress in your brain which can lead to some horrible mental issues in the future if it’s not handled healthily. That’s where meditation can help! There are many different types of meditation that focus on sifting through the thoughts of the day and categorizing them on what to remember and what to let go. This can take a huge amount of stress away from your brain.

Another great way that meditation can improve your mental health is by improving your self-esteem and self-confidence. Many forms of meditation can also help improve these! They focus on the positives about you and how to improve yourself every day through meditation. A low self-esteem can lead to mental disorders like depression, so by raising your self-esteem you can help combat mental illness just a bit more.

Finally, meditation before bed can help you get a more restful night sleep, boosting your mental activity and allowing for a full night’s sleep and restoration. Lots of time, excessive sleep deprivation or not allowing yourself to get into a deep sleep can stress your body out. Like I said above, that’s not good for your mental health! Meditation before bed helps your mind unwind from the day and calm down your body so that it can go to sleep faster and get into deep sleep quicker.

Meditate a bit this week to help improve your mentality and fight off that mental illness. We want to stay mentally healthy as much as possibly and meditation certainly can help that. It can help get rid of stress, improve self-confidence, and help you sleep better at night. Meditate for at least fifteen minutes a few times a week and I’m sure you’ll notice a huge difference.
